Details and such...

Hello to everyone.

Before we start reading we need to sort out a few details. Such as, how often we will post, how many chapters to read and so on. Please post or comment here your ideas and what you think is manageable. I think posting once a week would be okay, but right now I have plenty of time. I am not sure as to how many chapters, maybe two or three a week? I really have no idea. I am looking forward to your suggestions.

Also, if there is a title you would like to add to the suggested readings list or an interesting link to add, let me know and I can set you up with admin. rights to change the template or you can just let me know and I will make the changes/ additions. Also, the name of the blog is just temporary, please make suggestions.

Thanks, hope to hear from everybody soon :-)

I'm thinking that once a week contributions for all may be a bit much to handle. Maybe we can read 3-4 chapters and post every 3-4 weeks, kind of like having a monthly assignment due.

Also, are we going to be addressing specific questions in our postings about the reading? I think this maybe be a constructive way of tackling the reading while keeping everyone on topic.

I can't wait to read 'Birth of Venus'. I haven't read it. I have read 'Geisha' and 'Compass', both good, and would be willing to read again.

Hmmmm. I understand that people are busy, but do you realize that if we read 3-4 chapters a month, it might take us half a year or more to read a book? Too slow I think. And if we take that long, the plot will lose momentum and we'll start forgetting bits at the beginning. At least I will. If you're too busy to comment one week, it's not like we're going to hunt you down. It's just for fun, right? I say stick with 3 or 4, or maybe even 2 chapters a week. That should keep the momentum going, while at the same time leaving lots of room for discussion.

I agree with both YK and Violette, I think posting once a week too onerous for some, but how about twice a month and at least 2-3 chapters per week? We can always try it out and see... as Violette says, it is for fun and a good way to keep in touch too :-)

I'm with Violette -- I would probably read the whole book over a period of a week or two (it used to take me 2 days per book, but with a baby, my reading time has disintegrated). I would forget most of the book if we only posted once a month. So, posting once every week or every two weeks would be best for me (as voted in the poll). So far, I love all the book titles, but if we read Golden Compass, I think we should read the whole trilogy. I've read the first book three times now for school and have never managed to read the other two books.

Just thought I'd post so you know I actually do read the blog! :)

Something else which just occurred to me as regards to how long we are going to spend on one book: library books. I am probably going to take some of these books out from the library rather than buying them, and the maximum loan period (here at least) is six weeks, and that's if no one puts a hold on it. I'm thinking we should be done a book every two months. We can allow extra time if the book is long.

And I agree with Ash: If you're going to do the Golden Compass (Book One of His Dark Materials), you've gotta do the trilogy. I have read all three, and I found that the first one only starts to get into it and I was unsatisfied until I had read them all. If you chose to do His Dark Materials I would probably not read all the books again, but I would love to discuss them.

Sounds like we're all in the same general ball park for reading and posting, and it will probably vary per book, some requiring more attention than others. I think we all understand that everyone has times when we are swamped with life, and times when we can offer more, but there's enough of us to keep a good momentum I think.

When do you think we should start, after Christmas, beginning of January?

I think sometimes we might need to address specific questions, even if just to get things going. But spontaneous is good too. We could try 'winging it' for a while and see how it goes.

I've also read the Golden Compass Trilogy, but would read again.....
