Next book & other stuff

Hiya folks,
Well it seems that we have worked out a few bumps in the road to book blogging. I will post the suggested response prompts on the sidebar, however if you have any other suggestions or questions that you think we should ponder, please post them.

We have to decide which book to read next, especially since I need to get it from the library. I will post a poll with three or four book choices, so if you have any ideas on which to choose between, please post before this coming Sunday.

Y... I was going to respond to your post on "Birth..." but I have lost all enthusiasm. Suffice it to say that I enjoyed the book more than you did, but agree that it left a lot to be desired. I would give it a 4 out of 10.

Okay everyone... lets choose a new book and start reading again!!!

I'd like to cast one vote for "Golden Compass."

Yay Golden Compass. It sort of follows from some of the themes in Birth of Venus, like the part where they are talking about original sin, you know, the part with Eve and the Apple, and religion, the nature of God, etc. Although I must recommend that we read the entire series.

I don't know if any of you have objections to doing the entire series. Perhaps some of you are thinking that you don't want to spend that much time on one author, but the first book just barely brushes the surface of the themes and the plot. Believe me, it will be worth it to do all three. And it's not like they are terribly long novels. Well, anyways, I'm pushing for the whole series, let me know what you all think.

All three! I've only read the first and this would push me to finish the trilogy...finally!

After 4 days of not being able to log onto the blog, I finally got someone at blogger to reply and I'm back!

Oh how to decide, I was really wanting to read Geisha, but I would love to read The Golden Compass Trilogy again. Yes, I've already read all 3, loved them, and would welcome the chance to read them again with people that I could ask questions. Fantasy is not my regular 'genre', I got a bit lost once in a while. But I did notice a few things that no one else did in Anna's class, so I was very proud. Can I remember them now, well, no, but perhaps my memory will be sparked when I come across them again.

For those wanting to know how to pronounce her name, it's Lie-Rah, this becomes apparent far into the book during a certain incident, and it really ticked people off in my class who were pronouncing her name differently that it wasn't clarified earlier in the book, because it's hard to switch a characters name 3/4 way through the story.

Well, I guess I'll go and vote now, I'm having flashbacks to the Federal Election, even if I vote for Geisha, I know it won't win.

Gardengirl: Memoirs of a Geisha is a nice, light, fluffy read with a little more depth than Birth of Venus (although the Geisha's character does arc!!). Yes, I was into Geisha when I lost my copy in a Paris hostel, but I got over it. I was more upset over losing a book than finishing the story, though.

Don't you want to read something with a bit more substance?? Besides, what's in fantasy that's not in other genres? Why, just a bit more imagination, that's all!

Well, yes, I would like to read something with substance (although I don't always want to, sometimes I just want fluff!), but choosing Geisha over Compass isn't choosing fluff over substance, it's choosing something I haven't read before over something I have.

It doesn't really matter to me which book is read next, or after that, etc. because I'm usually reading 3 or 4 books at the same time anyway. Geisha would be nice because I haven't read it yet, but Compass would be nice too because I had a lot of questions when I was reading it.

I hope this blog will try and balance the fluff with the substance, I think both are important. We can only guess what belongs where though, since they are such subjective and personal things. And it's when we disagree on this point where we will likely learn the most!

Welcome Sue, glad you made it :-)

I am not sure that we will be blogging about all three, but for sure the first one!

I am looking forward to it, I just found out the library has my book waiting for me. Yeah!
