Artemis Fowl Returns!

I am currently reading the fifth book in Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl series, The Lost Colony. As a huge fan of "fairy books" - books about fairies or based on fairy tales, you will probably see me blogging a lot of this genre. I'm a bit of a fantasy junkie. I'm currently four chapters into the book. It's got a slow start, but it seems pretty good! I'll keep you posted.

PS Watch out for sporadic non-fiction blogs. I tend to read non-fiction quickly and in spurts - so I may have random blogs when I come upon something amazing!

Ash, what did you think of the Opal Deception? I was kind of disappointed in that one... not as good as the previous. I hope that this one will be better. Keep me posted.

Alright, I finally finished the fifth Artemis Fowl book last night.

The basis of the Artemis Fowl series is that fairies are real and, instead of fighting for control of the earth with humans, they moved their civilization underground. They also have WAY BETTER technology than us. In the first book, Artemis Fowl, a twelve year old millionaire genius, learns of their existence and threatens to expose them if they do not meet his monetary demands. Eoin Colfer describes his book as "Die Hard with Fairies" - that should explain why I am a fan of the series.

In the latest book, we learn that the eighth fairy family, the demons, chose to remove themselves to an alternate dimension rather than move underground with the other fairies. Artemis, now working with the fairies after four books, has learned that this alternate dimension is collapsing and that soon demons will be back on earth whether they like it or not. However, a new child genius has also learned about the demons and is acting against Artemis at every turn. And so, the plot thickens.

This is not my favorite in the series, but it's not too bad. My favorite is still the original. The book has a very slow start and is frankly a bit soppy. There aren't very many surprises either. I actually guessed the ending well before it arrived. The emphasis in this book is on Artemis himself and a couple of new characters. Old fairy favorites get short shrift here. All in all, it's a decent book...but I certainly wouldn't have been reading the entire series if this had been the pilot.

Two skulls out of five.
