Reader's Advisory Help

Hi everyone, hoping you can help me choose some books as Christmas gifts for young adults. I need really really good books for the following...

19 yr old boy (I was thinking Guards!Guards!)?
18 year old girl
14 year old girl (Septimus Heap)?
10 year old girl
8 year old boy

*All are Harry Potter fans, and have read the other 'popular' stuff like Artemis Fowl, Capt Underpants, Unfortunate Events, Eragon, etc. So I need help with some titles that are not media prolific.

Thanks!

I really enjoyed Madeline L'Engle's series when I was younger and continue to get something new every time I re-read it. 'A Wrinkle in Time' is my fav. This series may be good for the 18 yr girl.

I'll do some thinking on the younger ones....

For the 14 yr boy, maybe Robert Lynn Aspirin. He's alot like Terry Pratchett but punnier. The "Myth" Series is good - the earlier in the series the better as I heard he went bankrupt or destitute and has been writing only for the money. His later "Phule" series is good too, but, again, the earlier, the better.

Sorry for the mis-read in sexes of the kids....

for the girls (all) Madeline L'Engle is good.

For the younger boy, I don't know. My friend has a 7 yr old boy and he's really into gaming at the moment. I can't talk to the kid any more. He was really into pirates for the longest time, then dragons. Now it's gameboy with X-Men and a Pokemon card game (of which he doesn't really know the rules). Superheroes and big action seems to be the thing at his age.

Hope this helps...

I really recommend Diane Duane's Young Wizards Series. The first book is called "So you want to be a wizard?". It was first published in the early 80s, but there are eight books in the series with the most recent one being published just last year. It's got a boy and a girl, Nita and Kit, learning how to do magic like in Harry Potter, but with a more science-fiction/philisophical feel to it. That would be good for the 10 year old or the 14 year old.

Okay, here we go:

For the 14 and 18 year old girl, I recommend Jerry Spinelli's Stargirl. It is not a fantasy book, but I consider it one of the best books that I have read and I am a huge fantasy fan.

For the 8 year old boy and the 10 year old girl, I recommend M.T. Anderson's Whales on Stilts.

For the 19 year old boy, I recommend Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman.

For all of them, I recommend anything by Terry Pratchett. His kids books and adult books are equally fantastic. Discwrold is a fabulous series.

I haven't yet read it, but I would also be tempted to recommend Here, There Be Dragons by James A. Owen for all of them. It features three boys, John, Jack, and Charles, all of whom are based on the imagined youths of three famous fantasy authors. It's on my wish list this year!

Discworld, not Discwrold.

I thought I proofread that!

I was in the Wee Book Inn the other day and some more authors came to mind. Remember the Adrian Mole Series by Sue Townsend? Even though it was geared to pre-adolesent boys, I've rarely laughed so hard at a book.

Are the Judy Blume books still available? I still remember sitting behind the stacks in my elementary school library reading 'Are you there God, it's me Margaret?' and wondering what it would be like to get my period!

Both of these authors have classics aimed at pre- and adoloscent readers.
